Common grazing dilemmas

Crofters in the Highlands and Islands will be offered solutions to common grazing dilemmas at two workshops in the New Year.

Led by crofting expert Arthur MacDonald, the meetings will highlight various dilemmas before looking at the solutions open to common grazing committees.

These include issues such as responsibility for border fencing and making improvements to common grazing areas, to financial management and payment for the township bull.

The meetings are aimed at both experienced common grazing committee members and those new to, or thinking of joining, a committee.

The first meeting will be held at West Highland College UHI, Portree, on 22 January, from 7.30-9.30pm.

It will be followed by a second meeting at Dark Island Hotel in Benbecula on 30 January.

Organiser Janette Sutherland, Senior Consultant and Area Manager of SAC Consulting Portree/Skye, said: “It is good to get an opportunity to discuss dilemmas and the various options available to common grazing committees.”
