Spending some time in a vet practice is an essential part of finding out if being a vet is the right career path and is one of the BVSci entry requirements. Please consider providing work experience for prospective students if you can.

We are interested in hearing from businesses who can help veterinary students consolidate their practical learning and communication skills across a range of species. Students must complete their animal husbandry extra mural studies (EMS) during holidays by the end of their second year.

Suitable placements include kennels/catteries, stables and livestock farms, particularly at lambing time and dairy. Working with other key sectors such as pigs, poultry, aquaculture, and small mammals, exotics/zoo and wildlife is also encouraged. Students are trained and assessed in safe animal handling and husbandry before going out on placements, which usually last 1-2 weeks each. Employer liability insurance is required. We would like to hear from all types of practices and veterinary businesses who can support veterinary students to further develop their clinical skills and knowledge. Students are required to complete clinical extra mural studies (EMS) from 3rd year to the end of final year in addition to final year rotations. Placements usually last 2-4 weeks each. The Advisory Group is integral in contributing to the school’s vision and helping to design the pathways to achieve it. Members’ remit is to:

• Assist with our mission-based admissions policy
• Advise on regular reviews of the curriculum in line with the real-world changes occurring in in the profession, in particular in relation to rural/regional areas, and
• Support relationships with partners, wider veterinary profession, and farming communities.
